Pickin' on Nashville is the debut album from the American country rock/southern rock band The Kentucky Headhunters. It features the singles "Walk Softly on This Heart of Mine", "Oh Lonesome Me", "Dumas Walker", and "Rock 'n' Roll Angel", all of which charted in the Top 40 on the Hot Country Songs charts. Oh Lonesome Me" was also the highest charting, at The album won a Grammy Award for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for the band in 1991.
More concerning at the time, neither did influential record man Harold Shedd, who signed the long-haired, scruffy-looking Headhunters to their deal with Mercury Records and was poised to introduce them to Nashville and beyond. Three decades on, artists are still paying tribute to the Headhunters, their breakout Pickin’ on Nashville, and that head-scratching hit Dumas Walker. At a 2017 Lexington, Kentucky, tour stop, contemporary superstar Eric Church, well aware of where he was playing that night, teed up a pair of songs from Bluegrass State artists.

Pickin’ On Nashville came out in October 1989. It blew up like an atom bomb, and changed our lives forever. Well, almost, says Richard. After the release of the HeadHunters’ second album Electric Barnyard, all hell broke loose. On June 2, 1992, Doug and Ricky Phelps left to start a duo career. Longtime friend and cousin Anthony Kenney came to their rescue to play bass, and buddy Mark Orr was recruited for vocals.
