The Raincoats is the debut studio album by English rock band the Raincoats. It was released in 1979 on Rough Trade Records. The album is perhaps best known for its off-kilter cover of "Lola" by the Kinks. The album's seventh track, "The Void", was notably covered by Hole in 1994. In May 2010, the band performed the album in its entirety in London.
The Raincoats were formed in 1977 by Ana da Silva (vocals, guitar) and Gina Birch (vocals, bass) while they were students at Hornsey College of Art, London, England. The first line-up included Ross Crighton on guitar and Nick Turner on drums for the band’s first gig in November 1977. The Raincoats is a beginning, but it is also a record about beginnings. In its songs you hear a cultural genesis story. The Raincoats were a group of women who were, in part, just learning to play their instruments, but their debut album also coincides with the start of a whole artistic sensibility, one of fearless and knowing amateurism. These overcast songs are charged with the feeling of newness that comes with realizing you are not what you expected.

Picking the "best" Raincoats is more an intellectual exercise than it is a work of thoughtful criticism. So, to make it easy for the benighted, all three studio releases are absolutely essential. Their live cassette is wonderful, but not the ideal entry point. Better yet, start with their debut, a soaring, daring, ed folk-punk record. Don't let the words "avant-garde" scare you off; the Raincoats are not harsh or unapproachable. In fact, this music, even at its most dissonant, is stunning and captivating.
The Raincoats Tracklist. 1. Fairytale in the Supermarket Lyrics. 2. No Side to Fall In Lyrics. This album was very revolutionary for the time it was released. It blends post-punk (that was a new thing in 1979) with a very experimental sound. It also has a awesome cover of the song Lola by The Kinks and a cover of fellow post-punk band The Slits. The Raincoats Q&A.
Even though the album itself was produced by Mayo Thompson (from that brilliant 60s psychedelic band 'the red krayola') the songs are never over long (often they seem too short!) and never ever pretentious - hidden within are examinations of women's rights and other political subjects, but they are never over-examined and often wry observations.
