His song "Teen Beat", on Original Sound Records, rose to number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1959. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. Subsequently, he signed with the Imperial record label, and pounded out two more Top 40 hits, "Let There Be Drums", which went to number 7 on the Billboard. Hot 100, and "Drums Are My Beat". In December 1961, the British music magazine, NME, reported that "Let There Be Drums" had gone Top 10 in both the United Kingdom and United States

Born Sander Nelson in Santa Monica, California on December 1, 1938, he attended the same high school with such later musical stalwarts as Jan Berry, Dean Torrence (Jan & Dean), Phil Spector and Nancy Sinatra before joining the local band Kip Tyler & His Flips in 1958, and his drumming is evident.
