Geoffrey Downes has to date released four full-length albums under the name "New Dance Orchestra". These four albums are rather different from each other. The best of the four is by far the 1986 debut The Light Program, an all-instrumental, keyboard-driven symphony in five parts. The second best New Dance Orchestra album is 1999's The World Service, likewise an all-instrumental work. 1992's Vox Humana was more of a song-based album with various guests singing lead on different tracks. This brings us to the present album, released in 2010, entitled Electronica. Comparing this to the previous three New Dance Orchestra albums, the most similar is Vox Humana in virtue of this being a song-based, vocally driven album. The vocals on all 12 songs are handled by Anne-Marie Helder who has a fine voice. Downes himself stands for keyboards and programming.

Geoffrey Downes (born 25 August 1952) is an English keyboardist, songwriter, and record producer who gained fame as a member of the new wave group The Buggles with Trevor Horn, the progressive rock band Yes, and the supergroup Asia. Born in Stockport, Downes moved to London to pursue a music career. In 1977, he formed The Buggles with Horn and enjoyed success with their first album The Age of Plastic (1980) which included the worldwide hit single "Video Killed the Radio Star".

The actual artist for the album is listed as Geoff Downes and the New Dance Orchestra. The liner says that the music the group performs is designed to bring tone and color to the stereo sound spectrum. It lists their further goals are to simultaneously retain "a deep musical foundation, upon which are built a series of images to stimulate the listener in his or her own domain. High ideals indeed, but does the music live up to it? Well, this music is strictly instrumental and quite electronic, but it does contain some very potent sound imagery and power and majesty

The promotional bumf tried to promote this work as being along the lines of TANGERINE DREAM and while there are definite similarities, this could as easily pass a 'compare & match' test held up against VANGELIS or even more musical moments of THE RESIDENTS. Where this differs so much from the TANGERINES' is in the variety of the compositions - where, even now TD are heavily led by sequencers, albeit leading them through a soft electronic neo-FLOYD soundscape which is still arguable their very own domain, DOWNES & THE NEW DANCE ORCHESTRA explore old regions with a new coloration, love and tenderness. This is a seemingly smooth journey through a variety of awkward bedfellows - Classical Chamber Music, Light Jazz, Eastern Traditional, and like many journeys it paints itself indelibly onto the memory from a palette of rich and varied colour tones. Themes grow based on preset keyboards played with a proficient ease, sequencing is kept to a minimum, military drums appear and disappear, and he romps through tunes, adapting traditional musics and modern soft prog styles with the ease of any top notch Keyboard Wizard - which he clearly is. As a composer and musician, he stands among the likes of WAKEMAN & EMERSON. Outside of the names mentioned above, snatches of a wide variety of comparisons come & go - from STARTLED INSECTS at their early best to the orchestral break on JOHN MILES' 70's hit "Music" come to mind. All tracks flow along without even a hairline gap between each.Okay, so this is nothing new, pushes no boundaries nor breaks new ground, but it is a masterful recording of bright, colourful musicianship, always transforming, searching each area of it's realm, never faltering in it's progress. As with my review of "The Dream Mixes" (elsewhere in this issue) this is a kind of incidental music favoured by television - symbolic in it's lack of human voices (as few people tune into Test Cards or Jobfinder at such unearthly times - the majority of humanity is asleep and without voice, and the few who ARE awake don't need language to complicate their tired perception). Easy listening, full of variety, gravid with a cornucopia litter of tunes. As a coda to this review I saw DOWNES on the "Rock Family Trees" programme & understand a little more about the career which led him to this album & beyond. He became noticed by the public as part of THE BUGGLES (no, you still have to write it on your CV, Mr. DOWNES), then joined YES, before Progressing to Prog Rock Supergroup ASIA. Like them or not, this is an admirable pedigree.Originally reviewed for Soft Watch.
