Two high–powered studio sessions (from 1997 and last November) presided over by Canadian drummer Bernard Primeau, the first of which is enhanced by the prolific talents of American trombonist Ray Anderson. The second, Un Soufflé Latin (whose name speaks for itself, even in French), represents a comeback of sorts, as Primeau was diagnosed in 1998 with thyroid cancer. Has his brush with death slowed him down? Listen for yourself. To these ears, Primeau seems every ounce as earnest, aggressive and focused on Soufflé as he is on Virage, if not more so. On each of them, he draws his creative power. Start your music shopping from All About Jazz and you'll support us in the process.

Bernard de Montréal (1939–2003) was a Canadian author and lecturer. The author defined his teachings as Psychologie Évolutionnaire, which translates into English as Evolutionary Psychology (not to be confused with the similar term dealing with a branch of cognitive psychology that draws on the sociobiological theories of natural evolution)

Renamed the Bernard Primeau Jazz Ensemble five years later, the rotating lineup was a launching pad for talents including Rémi Bolduc, Yannick Rieu, and Normand Guilbeault. After debuting as a leader with 1987's Perspectives, Primeau headlined 11 LPs in all, winning the 1997 Felix for Jazz Album of the Year with Oeuvres de Felix Leclerc. He also earned the 2005 Oscar Peterson Prize for his contributions to Canadian jazz. After battling cancer, Primeau died on October 6, 2006, a day before the release of his final album, Rencontre Jazz et Classique. Jason Ankeny, Rovi  . Bernard Primeau Southend Stomp.
