A Tribe Called Quest is an American hip hop group, formed in 1985. They have released six studio albums, five compilations, sixteen singles and two extended plays. The group is made up of rapper/main producer Q-Tip (Kamaal Ibn John Fareed, formerly Jonathan Davis), the late rapper Phife Dawg (Malik Taylor) and DJ/co-producer Ali Shaheed Muhammad. Phife Dawg was only persuaded to join when a fourth member, rapper Jarobi White, joined the group
had a lot of love-hate rivalries They always wanted to one up each other. I think that’s why Q-Tip asked me to do something for their album, even though I was on their first album in the snippets in between. Verses From The Abstract samples the drums from Joe Farrell’s 1974 track Upon This Rock : The background instrumentation on the hook was sampled from Heatwave’s 1977 song The Star of a Story : "Verses from the Abstract" Track Info.
A Tribe Called Quest’s second album honors the jazz aesthetic and pushes it into new frontiers. On Verses from the Abstract, Q-Tip freestyles as Ron Carter plucks a loping yet sturdy bass rhythm. Check the Rhime evokes a bebop sound, while Jazz (We’ve Got) cribs a Grant Green guitar melody. Q-Tip’s and Phife’s voices are remarkably different-the former sounds casual and thoughtful, the latter bracingly direct-yet they blend harmoniously. It all ends with "Scenario," a boisterous soundclash between Tribe and Leaders of the New School. The Low End Theory A Tribe Called Quest
With each album, starting with People's Instinctive Travels, you notice the growth. They all present a different flavor. A true, mellowed out album. Filled with the most clever of samples, you notice the growth of the whole group. The first album was a shock, the second took risks, this album was a culmination. The Chase Pt. II has so many layers.
