Her first album, the eponymous 1955 release Helen Merrill, was an immediate success and associated her with the first generation of bebop jazz musicians. After a prolific 1950s and '60s when she recorded with Charlie Parker and Clifford Brown, Merrill spent time recording and touring in Europe and Japan, falling into obscurity in the United States.

Merrill has made some fascinating and unconventional albums over the last 46 years. However, this very well may be the most ambitious and deeply personal recording of the 71-year old singer's career. This is no random collection of songs, but, instead, a suite of music almost Ellingtonian in its conception and structure . While a project like this cannot avoid the air of pretension, Jelena Ana Milcetic . Helen Merrill has the weight and substance of genuine emotion. Merrill hardly conforms to the hip, finger snapping, scat happy image that the public has of a jazz singer.

Helen Merrill has never been afraid to take chances, but the veteran jazz singer is especially ambitious on Jelena Ana Milcetic - an autobiographical (or at least l) work that draws on jazz, pop, and folk as well as traditional Croatian music. This is an extremely personal CD, and to fully appreciate it, you should know something about Merrill's background. But the album is also a celebration of Merrill's American heritage. By housing jazz, pop, folk, and Croatian elements under the same roof, the New Yorker acknowledges her parents' homeland as well as her . But as unpredictable and eclectic as this album is, the CD never sounds confused or aimless.
