Now here is a really enterprising subject for a songbook album - a composer who was not a Tin Pan Alley pop craftsman and whose output had not been anthologized until this release. True, Silver wrote fewer standards than, say, Porter or the Gershwins, and fewer jazz artists covered them, thus limiting Fantasy's choices (the zany Eddie Jefferson is heard on three of the 16 tracks, and his rendition of "The Preacher" is followed by another from Shirley Scott). Yet this collection gives ample and valuable evidence of how underregarded Silver has been as a composer.

Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers is a 1956 studio album by jazz pianist Horace Silver with drummer Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. It was an important album in the establishment of the hard bop style, and was the first studio album released under the band name The Jazz Messengers, which Blakey would use for the rest of his career. Originally released as an LP, the album has subsequently been reissued on CD several times.

Their Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers album contained Silver's first hit, "The Preacher". After leaving Blakey in 1956, Silver formed his own quintet, with what became the standard small group line-up of tenor saxophone, trumpet, piano, bass, and drums. Early in his career, Silver composed contrafacts and blues-based melodies (including "Doodlin'" and "Opus de Funk"). The latter was "a typical Silver creation: advanced in its harmonic structure and general approach but with a catchy tune and finger-snapping beat. His innovative incorporation of gospel and blues sounds into jazz compositions took place while.

Arrangement: Jazz Ensemble COMPOSER(S): Horace Silver ARRANGER(S): Victor Lopez Description: Opus de Funk is a hard driving Latin-swing featuring alto and trumpet. Arranger Victor López has tamed this very hip Horace Silver jazz tune for the Jazz Band Series. With a sax soli, a trombone and tenor soli, alto solo, trumpet solo, and bass solo there's plenty of action in this chart. Trumpet range to written G, bone to F. This chart has style! (3:02).
