As an introduction to the work of A Guy Called Gerald, the monster name in electronic music, this album is a disappointment. Opening with a short ambient intro and ending with a slow-building nearly nu-jazz-lite house tune, this album is astonishingly dull. Throughout he maintains a calm presence via sustained synths, which float around tightly structured beats, but it lacks the sincerity to draw listeners into the spiritual mind set it tries to project

As one of the progenitors of modern techno, you have to give Gerald Simpson (better known as A Guy Called Gerald) his due. So as _To All Things What They Need_ starts off on an ambient notes of "American Cars," Simpson moves into a restless, genre-hopping album. From the electro fo "To Love" to the downtempo, spoken word "Millennium Sanhedrin" (with Ursula Rucker, of course), Simpson slides easily from one style to the next. A muezzin takes center stage in the Middle Eastern-influenced "Call For Prayer" while "Tajeen" spices the pot with with ethnic electro. "First Try" is a beautiful, swirling, string-laden piece of acid, while "Pump" is a straight-up house jam. Even if the groundbreaking part of his career has passed, he can still bring out the best of the machines.

very choice album this. currently listening to it on my home stereo, and the track 'to love' is cruising out with some nice deep sub bass holding it all down. other highlights include the derrick may sounding track 'first try' which is really cool, just nice and hypnotic. a full spectrum album with everything from deep detroit techno to mellow downbeat with spoken word. i dig this sound to the max.
