Fragment 9 Some years back I put together this fantastic band to do one European tour. The music I conceived for us to play was a bit bizarre: I went back through all my music, everything I had ever written, and took a fragment from each. Sometimes it was a bass line, sometimes a harmony or a theme, or parts of those.

Bobby Previte's Bump. CD - Palmetto 2091). Bobby Previte's Bump has the same instrumentation as the Jazz Crusaders (tenor saxophonist Marty Ehrlich, trombonist Curtis Fowlkes, keyboardist Wayne Horvitz, electric bassist Steve Swallow, and Previte on drums), but sounds nothing at all like that soul-jazz band. This set features five forward-thinking players whose solos and ensemble work are full of adventure, wit, and unpredictability.
Bobby Previte & Bump: Counterclockwise by Glenn Astarita, published on April 2, 2003. Drummer/composer Bobby Previte’s second outing for this jazz record label was recorded live in the studio. Here, the drummer’s forceful leadership shines radiantly, as he often shouts audibles to his band-mates, amid a rhythmically charged sequence of works. Previte provides the chutzpah via a power-packed melding of peppery, funk/jazz and rock grooves. Essentially, this is an all-star lineup of modern jazz cats. During many of these pieces, saxophonist Marty Ehrlich and trombonist Curtis Fowlkes blow steamy and altogether punctual choruses atop the rhythm section’s upfront attack.
They ought to print a warning on Bobby Previte records: put on and stand well back. The fearlessly free-spirited drummer pays no regard to sensibilities attuned to the pleasantries of smooth-jazz, classic-jazz or even the usual formalities of postbop. Counterclockwise is a bumpy journey through rudely reinvented TV-thriller styles, endlessly shuffling melodies and counter-melodies, free-improv driven by rattlingly arhythmic funk, and distantly reworked traditional jazz references.
