Gillian Welch and David Rawlings may, in fact, shock and appall folk purists with their fourth album, Soul Journey. The album's opener, "Look at Miss Ohio," evolves into her toughest rocker since "Pass You By" on her debut, Revival, and the whole album culminates in the relative cacophony of "Wrecking Ball," a drunked-up barroom stumble highlighted by Ketcham Secor's loping fiddle lines and Rawlings' fuzzed-out guitar solo

The long awaited first pressing of Gillian Welch’s Soul Journey contains some of her most beloved songs, including the timeless classic Look At Miss Ohio. The album was mastered directly from the original tapes through custom Ortofon amplifiers to a Neumann VMS-80 cutting system and plated and pressed on 150-gram audiophile-quality vinyl at Quality Record Pressings.

Soul Journey is the fourth studio album by Gillian Welch. As with all of her previous releases, it is a collaboration with David Rawlings. In their preceding work, Time (The Revelator), Welch and Rawlings had experimented with using only acoustic guitar and banjo as accompaniment. With Soul Journey, they return to the more diverse and modern instrumentation of their early work, employing electric guitar, organ, and drums. As with Welch's other works, a strong American roots influence can be heard. Fundamental to the practice is the idea that everything is energy, and moves in waves, patterns and rhythms. Roth describes the practice as a soul journey, and says that by moving the body, releasing the heart, and freeing the mind, one can connect to the essence of the soul, the source of inspiration in which an individual has unlimited possibility and potential. Look at Miss Ohio" – 4:16. Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor" (traditional with additional lyrics by Welch) – 2:45. Wayside/Back in Time" – 3:28. I Had a Real Good Mother and Father" (traditional with additional lyrics by Welch) – 3:14. No One Knows My Name" – 3:16. One Little Song" (Welch) – 3:12. I Made a Lovers Prayer" – 5:03. Wrecking Ball" – 4:56.

Soul Journey is the fourth release from Nashville’s endearing stepdaughter Gillian Welch. Overall, Soul Journey delights. The pared down lyrics and arrangements on the album make for a clearer, fresher listen than Welch’s previous efforts. Instead of slowly enchanting you into a candlelit, tapestried brood, this collection invites you out to the front porch for a cup of coffee and a spin in the rocking chair. It is a very pleasant, listenable and frequently rewarding album. But let’s hope she doesn’t get too comfy in the old rocking chair.
