Suicide maybe painless for the the person after the event, but the refrain says that "I can take it or leave it". By keeping the choice of suicide, it means that you never commit it. this is an allusion to Vietnam, the song rejects defeatism but acknowedges the sufering and the want to get out of it. All the recordings i can find of this song dont hae the 2nd and 4th verse.
