King Edward VIII did something that monarchs do not have the luxury of doing - he fell in love. King Edward was in love with Mrs. Wallis Simpson, not only an American but also a married woman already once divorced. To some, this was the love story of the century. To others, it was a scandal that threatened to weaken the monarchy

Edward VIII, also called (from 1936) Prince Edward, duke of Windsor, in full Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David, (born June 23, 1894, Richmond, Surrey, England-died May 28, 1972, Paris, France), prince of Wales (1911–36) and king of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of the British dominions and emperor of India from January.

Edward VIII, also known as the Duke of Windsor, gave up the throne for the love of his life, Wallis Simpson, in 1936. Learn more at Biography. Edward VIII became king of the United Kingdom following the death of his father, George V, but ruled for less than a year. Born on June 23, 1894, Edward VIII was a popular member of the royal family and heir to the throne. The coronation of Edward VIII as King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Commonwealth and as Emperor of India was due to take place at Westminster Abbey on 12 May 1937. Preparations had already begun and souvenirs were on sale when he abdicated on 11 December 1936. To keep everything from going to waste, it was decided to hold the coronation of his brother and successor George VI on the same date.

Subject: Abdication of a King. In January 1936, King George V died and his son Edward, Prince of Wales, became King. In this collection, we hear broadcasts that Edward made as Prince of Wales and during his brief reign. We also hear from the Duke and Duchess of Windsor themselves as they reflect on their lives and that momentous.

King Edward VIII reigned for less than a year and was never crowned after his infamous romance with Mrs Simpson plunged the country into the abdication crisis. Edward, Prince of Wales, eldest son of George V and Queen Mary and heir apparent, was known to the family as ‘David’. Charming and informal, he was a popular prince touring Britain and the empire, fond of golf, tennis, parties and dancing. Wanting to serve in the First World War, he was kept away from the front line lest he be killed, or worse, captured.

As Prince of Wales, Edward VIII (reigned January-December 1936) had successfully carried out a number of regional visits (including areas hit by economic depression) and other official engagements. These visits and his official tours overseas, together with his good war record and genuine care for the underprivileged, had made him popular. The first monarch to be a qualified pilot, Edward created The King's Flight in 1936 to provide air transport for the Royal family's official duties.
