Banks of the Ohio", also known as "Down on the Banks of the Ohio", is a 19th-century murder ballad, written by unknown authors, in which "Willie" invites his young lover for a walk during which she rejects his marriage proposal. Once they are alone on the river bank, he murders the young woman.

Monroe och hans bluegrassmusik har inspirerat mängder av musiker, både inom och utom countryn  . 1938 – "On The Banks Of The Ohio", "Fame Apart From God’s Aproval" (B-sidan med Uncle Dave Macon). 1938 – "Old Man’s Story", "I’ve Still Got 99". 1938 – "Pearly Gates", "On My Way Back Home".

If you don't love his "Bringin' in the Georgia Mail" (which sounds like a traditional folk song, though written by Nashville producer and tunesmith Fred Rose, better known for his association with Hank Williams), you might put a mirror to your mouth to see if you're still breathing.
