Pieces of Eight is the eighth studio album by Styx, released on September 1, 1978. Like the band's previous album, The Grand Illusion (1977), it managed to achieve triple platinum certification, thanks to the hit singles "Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)" and "Renegade". The band members produced and recorded the album (like their previous three efforts) at Paragon Studios in Chicago with recording engineer Barry Mraz and mixing engineer Rob Kingsland.

Pieces of Eight: Strangely enough, the title track of the album is one of the more forgettable parts of it. This is a good example of a typical Styx ballad, a calm beginning working up to subtly emotional power, but nothing outstanding, like nearly all of the rest of the album. Like "Queen of Spades," this average effort suffers unfairly from being packaged with so many gems. Aku Aku: An atmospheric outro. Take it or leave it. OK, I would be hard pressed to claim that this album is prog

In some ways, Styx was America's answer to Queen. The Chicago quintet never ascended to the ranks of rock-and-roll royalty, as did their English counterparts, nor are they held in as high a regard today. Styx was at a peak around the time of the release of superb album The Grand Illusion (1977) and Pieces of Eight (1978) presents more of the same good musicianship. Like The Grand Illusion, Pieces of Eight demonstrates the band's ability to write tight compositions that fused the progressive rock and hard rock influences seamlessly and it also went triple platinum. For a lot of fans, Pieces of Eight marked the end of their "classic" period.
