Rodgers and Hammerstein refers to the duo of composer Richard Rodgers (1902–1979) and lyricist-dramatist Oscar Hammerstein II (1895–1960), who together were an influential, innovative and successful American musical theatre writing team. They created a string of popular Broadway musicals in the 1940s and 1950s, initiating what is considered the "golden age" of musical theatre.

From The Sound of Music to Oklahoma! to South Pacific, Richard Rodgers helped change the face of Broadway musicals. In his later years, Rodgers created numerous awards and scholarships for artists at the Juilliard School of Music, the American Theater Wing and the American Academy of Dramatic Art, among other schools. Richard Rodgers triumphed over cancer of the jaw in 1955 and a laryngectomy in 1974 before dying at his home in New York City on December 30, 1979. His ashes were scattered at sea by his wife, Dorothy (Feiner) Rodgers, whom he had married in 1930. The couple had two daughters, Mary and Linda.
The dazzling Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, brought to lush life by the director of the original stage version, Joshua Logan. Set on a remote island during the Second World War, South Pacific tracks two parallel romances: one between a Navy nurse. Includes Overture, Intermission and Exit Music. Once upon a time, this was a fairly common element called an overture. Maybe the producers could have placed a still image or the word "Overture" on the screen, but in 1958 I think people were used to this format and wouldn't have given it a second thought.
Hammerstein’s work gained added impetus-and the whole project got a big shot in the arm-on April 27, 1948, with the surprise news that Tales of the South Pacific had won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. For Hammerstein, part of the strong appeal of Michener’s book was its frank treatment of racial prejudice, which was anything but a theoretical issue for his own family. Rodgers and Hammerstein had already re-invented the Broadway musical with their pioneering Oklahoma! and Carousel, which integrated dance, story, and song as never before in the service of realistic drama. Now they were dealing.
