Violinist Henryk Szeryng (1918-1988) played the Brahms Concerto innumerable times, the last time only two days before his death in 1988. He made commercial recordings of the work at least at least six times with such conductors as Pierre Monteux, Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt, Antal Dorati, Rafael Kubelik and Erich Leinsdorf. The orchestra is the great Concertgebouw under Bernard Haitink. And this performance is patrician in its impact, a perfect approach to this noble concerto. He is given extraordinarily sensitive support by the orchestra in a reading that is gentle and aristocratic. Strangely, the ever-popular Mendelssohn Concerto didn't figure as prominently in Szeryng's discography.

Felix Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64, is his last large orchestral work. It forms an important part of the violin repertoire and is one of the most popular and most frequently performed violin concertos in history. A typical performance lasts just under half an hour. Mendelssohn originally proposed the idea of the violin concerto to Ferdinand David, a close friend and then concertmaster of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra.

Henryk Szeryng; Concertgebouw Orchestra/Bernard Haitink. Originally released on Philips 416 418-2 (originally released 1971). Szeryng and Haitink offer an Olympian view of this great work, taking a broad tempo in the opening movement and building climaxes of enormous force. There is a remarkable urgency to Szeryng’s playing, an intensity of tone and rhetoric that verges on the incendiary, but there is considerable delicacy and poetry as well.
