Fifty years after humans first set foot on the Moon, people across the world are building on the small steps and giant leaps of the past to go further, opening space for more people and more missions. Every day, the Moon grows closer to those of us who dare to dream, explore, and solve problems. What was once impossible is becoming probable, and soon, it will become ordinary. We are calling on the generation who will take the next giant steps into space. If you are between 10-18 years old, help shape ideas for the future of space exploration with the international Humans In Space Youth Art Competition. The international, multi-media artwork call is now closed, but we have a special extended opportunity for Greater Houston area youth, supported by the Association for Space Explorers (ASE).

Juno's Waves instrument recorded the encounter with the bow shock over the course of about two hours on June 24, 2016. Plasma Waves: Plasma waves, like the roaring ocean surf, create a rhythmic cacophony that - with the EMFISIS instrument aboard NASA’s Van Allen Probes - we can hear across space. Saturn's Radio Emissions: Saturn is a source of intense radio emissions, which were monitored by the Cassini spacecraft. The radio waves are closely related to the auroras near the poles of the planet. Read Next Related Article. Building a Moon Rocket. During the early years of the American and Soviet race into space, their competition was measured by headline-making "firsts": the first satellite, first robotic spacecraft to the Moon, first man in space, first woman in space, and first spacewalk. To the dismay of the United States, the Soviet Union achieved each of these feats first. These events triggered a drive to catch up with-and surpass-the Soviets, especially in the high-profile endeavor of human space exploration.

A solar flare that struck both Earth and Mars in 2001 caused similar changes in the upper atmospheres of both planets. The finding could have implications for future Mars missions, since solar flares can damage satellites, disrupt wireless communications. If humans go to Mars and have a similar positioning system there, knowing about ionosphere effects will be important," Withers said. While solar flare radiation is typically not dangerous to humans if they are are at Earth's surface or have proper protection, the flares can be followed by streams of high-speed particles called protons. These "proton storms" are potentially lethal to astronauts and have been known to reach Earth in as little as 15 minutes
Space Weather Prediction Center. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Saturday, July 06, 2019 16:55:09. 24-Hour Observed Maximums. The forecast comes from the Solar Cycle Prediction Panel representing NOAA, the International Space Environmental Services (ISES), and NASA. This amounts to the ‘official’ forecast for the solar cycle. The Prediction Panel forecasts the sunspot number expected for solar maximum and had predicted a maximum of 90 occurring in May, 2013. While awaiting final confirmation, all evidence points to the most recent solar maximum having peaked at 82 in April, 2014. This was within the expected range for the peak, but occurred significantly later than predicted.
