Shirley Temple Black (April 23, 1928 – February 10, 2014) was an American actress, singer, dancer, businesswoman, and diplomat who was Hollywood's number one box-office draw as a child actress from 1935 to 1938. As an adult, she was named United States ambassador to Ghana and to Czechoslovakia, and also served as Chief of Protocol of the United States. Temple began her film career at the age of three in 1932.

Shirley Temple Black was more than just a movie star. She was the quintessential American girl who charmed generations of viewers, long after she outgrew her status as a child star. Rediscover Shirley Temple. Following the passing of child star Shirley Temple Black at the age of 85 on Feb. 10, the world was abuzz with sentiments from young and old alike. Throughout my life, I watched Shirley Temple movies with my mom and grandmom, said young mother Alyssa Borowiak.

We need sad songs for the comfort they can provide. Bernie Taupin captured this sentiment best and hid it in a jaunty little pop song by Elton John: If someone is suffering enough to write it down When every single word makes sense Then it’s easier to have those songs around The kick inside is in the line that finally gets to you And it feels so good to hurt so bad And suffer just enough to sing the blues. Yes, sad songs do say so much. And these 50 songs helped the Paste staff to hurt so good. I tried to keep it to one song per artist but Johnny Cash ended up getting a pass.

Missy Elliott, ‘The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)’. With a memorable, Hype Williams-directed video and a sample of 1970s soul classic ‘I Can’t Stand The Rain’, this single from Missy’s 1997 debut album announced a major league talent onto the US hip-hop landscape. Sparse and sensual, it’s as laid back as it is innovative. Digital Underground, ‘The Humpty Dance’.
