The String Quartet, Op. 28 by Anton Webern is written for the standard string quartet group of two violins, viola and cello. It was the last piece of chamber music that Webern wrote (his other late works include two cantatas Op. 29/31 and the Variations for Orchestra, Op. 30). The work was initially planned in November 1936 and was premiered at the Coolidge Festival in Pittsfield, Massachusetts on September 22, 1938 in response to a commission that year from Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge.

Along with their Bartok cycle and their Webern performances this firmly establishes the Emerson Quartet as one of the greatest string quartets of the last 50 years, matched only by the great Tokyo and Italian String Quartets and exceeding them in the modern 20th century chamber music repertoire.

Shostakovich's string quartets are many things, most of them modified by the adjective extreme. They are extremely expressive, extremely intense, extremely ironic, extremely passionate, extremely powerful, but whatever else they are, the Shostakovich string quartets are never, ever cool. Even at his most ironic, Shostakovich is never, ever cool and the Brodsky Quartet's, with its italicized tone and stylized interpretations, sound very, very cool. This is not to say that the Brodsky Quartet can't play the music

Stravinsky's compositional career was notable for its stylistic diversity. Igor Fyodorovich Stravinsky (Russian: Игорь Фёдорович Стравинский) (17th June 1882 – 6th April 1971) was a Russian composer who first achieved international fame with three ballets commissioned by the impresario Serge Diaghilev and.

Album title: Collection: String Quartets from the 20th Century. Composer(s): Bartok, Gubaidulina, Shostakovich, Stravinsky. Works: String Quartet No. 4; Three Pieces for String Quartet; String Quartet No. 2; String Quartet No. 8. Performer: Rubin Quartet. Likewise their approach to Shostakovich’s Eighth presents that most dolorously personal of quartet confessions as almost classically poised, its flood of feeling kept under tight rein. But this is all to the good, when we compare some of the self-indulgently lachrymose interpretations this much-recorded work has received; certainly there is no lack of commitment to the score as both human document and display of utterly focused technique.

Originally released on Olympia, the Shostakovich Quartet's recording of the Shostakovich Quartets is one of the hardest to find online.
