K-OS ‎– Atlantis: Hymns For Disco. Genre: Hip Hop. Style: Year: 2006. Atlantis: Hymns For Disco ‎(CD, Album). Virgin Music, EMI Music Canada. 0946 3 80224 2 8. K-OS.

True to its highfalutin title, Atlantis: Hymns for Disco is a conceptual piece, a melodious corrective to two-plus years of ostensible media falsities about its author. In this light, Atlantis resembles De La Soul's sophomore detour De La Soul Is Dead, on which the MTV darlings and granola-rap progenitors attempted to shed the . Age warmup gear and make an early-career three-point turn. K-Os' response to the controversy is relegated to an untitled interstitial track halfway through the album. Over a beatboxed backdrop, he creates an imagined scenario designed to deflate his critics: "This kid rolled up, and said, 'What's up with Emcee Murdah?' That was then son, this is now; I live in the moment, like a why to a ho.

Atlantis: Hymns for Disco came seemingly out of nowhere. I knew it was coming out, but I had no idea when. I saw the video for ELEctrik HeaT – the seekwiLL on MuchMusic weeks before its release, but still, October 10th came out of nowhere. I had no idea what to expect, and even after having listened to this album dozens of times, I still sort of don't. This album is inherently Canadian because it doesn't follow the melting pot ideology.

Coming from a purely musical standpoint (instead of a hip hop standpoint), this album is a serious piece of work. k-os seems to grow with every release and the music gets better with every release because of this growth. While it took me a while to get into a lot of songs from Joyful Rebellion, this album grabbed me from day one. Songs like "Born To Run", "Highway 7", "Sunday Morning", "Catdiesel", "Black Ice - Hymn 4 Disco", "Flypaper", "Ballad Of Noah", and the excellent "Electrick Heat-The Seekwill" are instant.

On October 10, 2006, Atlantis: Hymns For Disco was released in Canada, with a global release scheduled on February 6, 2007. The album went platinum in Canada during December of the same year. Atlantis, written and produced by k-os, featured collaborations with Sam Roberts and Buck 65. The album debuted as number one and number five on the "Digital Albums" and "Current Albums" Canadian charts, respectively. The album reached number five on Music World's top ten in its opening week

Continuing his practice of combining elements from multiple genres into something new and unique, Kevin Brereton, better known as k-os, reaches even further past his usual suspects on his third studio release, Atlantis: Hymns for Disco. He takes staples of hip-hop, reggae, and soul but adds to them hints of rock, blues, and punk. This ambitious use of resources and influences could very easily end up creating an album that sounded severely disjointed, even incoherent, but k-os is able to make something that, despite the diversity between tracks, works very much as a whole.
