The Nice were an English progressive rock band active in the late 1960s. They blended rock, jazz and classical music and were keyboardist Keith Emerson's first commercially successful band. The group was formed in 1967 by Emerson, Lee Jackson, David O'List and Ian Hague to back soul singer P. P. Arnold. After replacing Hague with Brian Davison, the group set out on their own, quickly developing a strong live following

The Nice's third album was their first to break them into the star recording bracket in the . where it reached number three on the charts. Though only measuring six songs in all, it covered a lot of territory, in a rich mixture of psychedelic rock, jazz, and classical that did a lot to map the format for progressive rock. The extended pretension of some of the numbers, viewed less forgivingly, might also seem like an antecedent to pop/rock.

The first US version of Nice was briefly reissued in 1973 by Columbia Special Products. Azrael Revisited" (Keith Emerson, Lee Jackson) – 5:52. Hang on to a Dream" (Tim Hardin) – 4:46. Diary of an Empty Day" (Music: Edouard Lalo arr. by Emerson, lyrics: Jackson) – 3:54. For Example" (Emerson, Jackson) – 8:51. Side two. "Rondo '69'" (Brubeck, Emerson, Jackson, Davison) – 7:53 (8:27 on the first US version). Lee Jackson – bass guitar, vocals. Brian Davison – drums, percussion.

Keith Emerson died the other day, aged 71, apparently by his own hand. According to Mari Kawaguchi, his partner of more than 20 years, he had been thrown into a depression by the effect of nerve damage on his ability to play his keyboard instruments, with a series of concerts in prospect. Whatever one’s opinion of Emerson’s work, it is extraordinarily sad that his career should seemingly have ended in that particular form of defeat. Of one thing there was no doubt: his love of music.

Emerson may be the standout here, but Jackson, O’List, and Davison all contribute significantly with energy and passion. CD versions of the original LP include additional material with some releases including alternative versions of tracks as well as Nice’s rendition of Leonard Bernstein’s America, an essential for progressive rock lovers. Side one. Flower King of Flies ( Keith Emerson, Lee Jackson ) – 3:19. The Thoughts of Emerlist Davjack (Emerson, David O’List ) – 2:49. War and Peace (Emerson, O’List, Davison, Jackson) – 5:13. Lee Jackson – bass, guitar, vocals, timpani. David O’List – guitar, trumpet, flute, vocals.
