Peter Brötzmann (born 6 March 1941) is a German free jazz saxophonist and clarinetist. He studied painting in Wuppertal and was involved with the Fluxus movement but grew dissatisfied with art galleries and exhibitions. He experienced his first jazz concert when he saw American jazz musician Sidney Bechet while still in school at Wuppertal, and it made a lasting impression.
Norwegian powerhouse Frode Gjerstad successfully confronts Brötzmann in concert for seven totally improvised numbers in an unmitigated blast of power. It can be difficult to listen to two such forceful players alone for the full length of a CD. Yet, they each listen so carefully to one another, and permit space to play such an important role, that each of the seven pieces is full of surprises and wonders.
