Street Sounds From the Bay Area: Music City Funk & Soul Grooves 1971-75. Focusing mainly on Los Angeles and San Francisco, the music ranges from the sweet harmonies of the Ballads' 'Butterfly' to the relentless groove of ZZ Hill's 'Think People'. As the album's subtitle notes, these songs cover the fertile period from 1967 to 1976, but most of these songs are so rare it's unlikely you've heard them before, even on other soul and funk compilations. In fact, the only song I'd hear before was "Think People," but the version I heard was by Vernon Garrett and not this terrific version by the underrated Z. Z. Hill.

Ace's 2016 compilation California Soul: Funk & Soul from the Golden State 1967-1976 collates a bunch of rare singles cut on the West Coast during the twilight of soul and the golden age of funk. Despite the deep, abiding influence of Sly & the Family Stone, California often gets brushed aside in this era of R&B history: so much of the music is rooted in the deep south that the music made in the bright California sunshine is treated as a footnote.
This is a list of bands from the San Francisco Bay Area, music groups founded in the San Francisco Bay Area, or who have been closely associated with the region. Individual musicians who formed bands under their own name there are included, but not if they are solo artists from the region.
Bay Area Funk 2 is an engrossing listen that will affirm the good taste of funk and soul connoisseurs and instantly educate the less familiar. Rare or not, these songs are great fun to listen to. That many of them have never been anthologized before, or perhaps even properly released, only adds to their value in today's drastically different times. Luv N'Haight should be applauded for digging up these treats from a lost era. They're certainly not doing it for the money. various artists bay area funk 2. 8.
