The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (BSO) is an English orchestra with a remit to serve the South and South West of England. Founded in 1893, the BSO has developed a reputation as one of the UK's major orchestras and has worked with many of the world's leading composers, conductors and performers. Originally based in Bournemouth, the BSO moved its offices to the adjacent town of Poole in 1979.
Kurt Weill: Symphonies Nos 1 and 2. (Naxos). The symphonies of Kurt Weill (1900-50) serve principally to emphasise his greater gifts as a theatre and song composer. With the first, from 1921, Alsop can do nothing with its bitty, restless scheme - a metaphor for Weill’s creativity - but the second symphony, written and performed in Paris shortly after Weill’s enforced departure from Germany, submits wholly to melody and manipulative emotional effect. Weill found asylum in America and returned to neither Europe nor symphonic form.
Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Marin Alsop Conductor. Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Symphony No 1. Author: Philip Clark. Hersch Symphonies Nos 1 and 2. Symphony No 2. Fracta. Arraché. Fracta (2002) and Arraché (2004) are marginally better because Hersch doesn't feel shackled by the expectations of the symphony. But he's feeding orchestras with what they already know, rather than subjecting our institutions to a post mortem and seeing what can be rescued from the bones.
