By the time Allman began planning the album, he had already defied the odds. He’d endured a liver transplant in 2010, but two years later was diagnosed with liver cancer. According to Lehman, cancer cells that had been in Allman’s body prior to the transplant spread to one of Allman’s lungs. In almost every detail, Southern Blood would eerily reference aspects of Allman’s past. Allman chose Fame because he and late brother Duane’s pre-Allmans band, Hour Glass, recorded there, and during the same period, Duane cemented his reputation at Fame by backing Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett and other R&B heroes. Released on 23 September 1970, The Allman Brothers Band's Idlewild South is a quintessential slice of Southern Rock and remains an underrated ge. Joe Cocker had a hit with it in 1972; Gregg Allman did another version of it in 1973 on his solo album and the single made the Billboard Top 20. In 1976 a reggae version charted in Britain sung by Paul Davidson and in 1980 the god father of Outlaw Rock, Willie Nelson made the top 10 of the Billboard Country Chart; other versions have been done by Patti Smith, Alison Krauss, Michael McDonald, Bob Seger and Hank Williams Jr. This was the first AB album produced by the legendary Atlantic producer and engineer, Tom Dowd.

The Allman Brothers Band released their self-titled debut album on November 4, 1969. Marking definitive dates in music history is always tricky business, but if you forced fans to reach a consensus on the birthdate of Southern rock, most would agree it came in November 1969 with the release of the Allman Brothers Band’s self-titled debut album. Born in Nashville barely a year apart, brothers Duane and Gregg Allman were raised in several Southern cities by their widowed mother (their father, a career military man, was murdered when the boys were still young), and picked up music while in their teens, both starting on electric guitar

The Allman Brothers Band had a lot to prove when they regrouped for the second time in 1990-namely if they could really make a run at the glories of the original golden era with new members Warren Haynes and Allen Woody. The title track of their comeback album answered a lot of questions. A classic Betts, country-tinged rocker, it tipped its hat to Native American philosophy, offered Blue Sky –like uplift and featured Haynes’ slide and Betts’ leads side by side.
