Buddy Holly is Buddy Holly's debut solo album and his second album overall (following The "Chirping" Crickets in 1957), released in February 1958. Although billed as a solo record, the personnel once again features Holly's band, the Crickets, accompanying him. Approximately one year later, Holly was killed in a plane crash. They recorded the song in Clovis, New Mexico, on May 27, 1957, the same day the song "Everyday" was recorded.

Buddy Holly terminated his association with the Crickets in November 1958. For the start of the "Winter Dance Party" tour, he assembled a band consisting of Waylon Jennings (bass), Tommy Allsup (guitar), and Carl Bunch (drums), with the opening vocals of Frankie Sardo.
