Jazz Orchestra is not everyones cup of tea, Oliver Nelson is not widely known outside the jazz fraternity, so the North London record store manager priced the record down, at £12. I thought low, given its Esquire pedgree. The record make perfect musical sense in the context of my other recent blues-driven records from Oliver Nelson, Screaming the Blues and The Blues and the Abstract Truth. Jazz of a different hue to modal and cool, a richer hotter musical palette.

Afro-American Sketches. CD - Original Jazz Classics. Oliver Nelson merged the rhythmic fervor of Africa and Black America with the organizational flair of Europe on this release. The often spectacular work features the orchestra sometimes whooping and clashing in the backdrop and other times giving soulful statements or converging in a blues setting. While Nelson combined Afro-Latin rhythmic support from Ray Barretto with crisp jazz drumming from Ed Shaughnessy, he also contributed his own soaring alto and tenor sax solos and conducted the orchestra. It was a monumental job, and Nelson exceeded it. Track Listing.

This is Oliver's first album (I think) featuring his compositions and arrangements. His playing and that of his personnel's is soulful, excellent technically; wonderful example of jazz in the early 60's. There was much more wonderful work to come from Oliver Nelson. 7 people found this helpful.
