Big Two-Hearted River is one of the best stories by one of the greatest short-story writers of the twentieth century. The story was about coming back from the war, as Ernest Hemingway later explained in A Moveable Feast (1964), but there was no mention of the war in it. Unless the reader knows In Our Time (1924, 1925), Hemingway’s first collection of short stories, Big Two-Hearted River will not make complete sense.
Big Two-Hearted River" is about Nick Adams, a character that appears in many Hemingway stories, like "Indian Camp" and "The Killers. Hemingway takes Nick through various stages of life, from boyhood to adulthood, and in "Big Two-Hearted River" Nick is a young man who has just come back to Michigan on a fishing trip after serving in World War I and is suffering from what was then called shell shock. Only, the war is never mentioned. Well fear not, because Big Two-Hearted River has loads to offer you too. You know when something is just a little off with one of your friends or loved ones? Maybe they aren’t talking as much, maybe they just see. ifferent than they usually are. And when you ask them about it, they tell you that nothing is wrong, but you know, because you’re perceptive.
