The Legend of Jesse James is a 1980 country music concept album by various artists singing songs by English songwriter Paul Kennerley, based on the story of American Old West outlaw Jesse James. The album features Levon Helm singing the role of Jesse James, Johnny Cash as Frank James, Charlie Daniels as Cole Younger and Emmylou Harris as Jesse James' wife, Zerelda James. Other artists included Rosanne Cash, Rodney Crowell and Albert Lee.

One of the tracks from The Legend of Jesse James, the Emmylou Harris/Levon Helm duet "One More Shot", can also be heard on the album (with Rick Danko, folksinger Eric Andersen and Norwegian roots artist Jonas Fjeld). The Legend of Jesse James has been re-released twice as a 2CD set paired with Kennerley's 1978 album White Mansions, first in 1997 on A&M in the UK under the title Confederate Tales, and then in 1999 in the US on Mercury Nashville as White Mansions and The Legend of Jesse James. 1. Ride Of The Redlegs. 2. Quantrill's Guerillas.
Jesse James has more focus and narrative momentum, with Levon Helm, Johnny Cash, and Emmylou Harris in lead roles. Though the albums are more noteworthy for artistic ambition than memorable material, Kennerley subsequently became a successful Nashville songwriter. This double-disc reissue documents one of the more curious careers in country music. Both 1978's White Mansions and 1980's The Legend of Jesse James are Southern song cycles that were conceived by Britain's Paul Kennerley, then an unknown songwriter who somehow recruited a high-profile cast for each. A Civil War saga from the Southern perspective, White Mansions suffers from caricature and cliché but benefits from signature contributions by Waylon Jennings, Jessi Colter, and Eric Clapton.

It's also the more raw and basic of the two - though a concept album telling the story of the fall of the southern Confederacy and the culture behind it, it is made up of songs that stand up better on their own, and shows a bracing diversity of styles, ranging from faux-19th century popular music to modern country-rock of. a century later. Legend of Jesse James is slicker and smoother, and also seems to make the transition to CD a little better on a technical level.

I saw some big names on the cover like Cash and Helm and said I had never heard of this album before. although the Fair Use Doctrine supports personal backups of purchased media i prefer to give the artists another chance and a sale before I dub)
