I saw the Dave King Trucking Company in Salem, OR in early September, and during the performance I made fun of them a lot. General hatin'-on-jazz stuff. I remembered enjoying one of the songs, "I Will Live Next to the Wrecking Yard," which it turned out was track 1 on Adopted Highway, and I bought the record from them. I listened a little to it before abandoning it for a couple months. The track stuck in my head, though, so I went back and listened to the record all the way through, and I was struck by a change in attitude.

Drummer Dave King has two solo albums and now two albums under the name of his other band, the Dave King Trucking Company. It's this 2013 release, Adopted Highway, that threatens to bury the legacy of The Bad Plus like it's nothing. The music within this album is so weird and alluring that Ethan Iverson and Reid Anderson are really going to have to pull off a miracle with King in the studio next time to top it. Dave King's main thing these days is welding Midwestern American roots music to jazz.

The track stuck in my head, though, so I went back and listened to the record all the way through, and my attitude changed over time. I realized that "Ice Princess" has bitchin' drums, that a Black Flag-y feedback solo takes up the middle seven minutes of "This Is a Non-Lecture," and that "When In North Dakota" is pretty darn funky for a song played by white jazz guys. Really I can't find much to complain about anymore about Adopted Highway; in fact it's become one of my favorite albums. If the Trucking Company comes through your town I recommend seeing them -- they put on a decent show and they deserve the support, even if they do play jazz.
