It was the third year of a new era in Polish music, ever since the Warsaw Autumn festival gave young musicians the opportunity to discover music on both sides of the Iron Curtain. It was around this time that Polish composers began forging their own response to musical developments in the West (specifically regarding twelve-tone composition, serialism and pointillism), the result of which would be identified as the so-called 'polnische Schule', or Polish School of composition. Penderecki's Threnody is also included on the album. Author: Jan Topolski, December 2010.
In 1832 Berlioz began a 30-year spell as music critic for the Journal des Débats and started writing for the Gazette Musicale in 1834, the year he produced his second symphony, Harold en Italie. When his requiem, Grande Messe des Morts, was first performed in 1837, its unprecedented scale - temporal, emotional and instrumental - left onlookers gasping in its wake, while Roméo et Juliette (1839) accomplished much the same reaction in the symphonic sphere. Did you know? Berlioz was also a music critic, but had a love-hate relationship with his work, even though he was one of few composers whose prose was as accomplished as his music.

Penderecki shot to notoriety in the musical avant-garde in 1960 with the haunting string music of his Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima .
