In the early days of the Wailing Souls, the first name that the group came up with in the late 60's was the Renegades. This group consisted of Winston 'Pipe' Matthews on lead vocals, Lloyd 'Bread' McDonald, and George 'Buddy' Haye. This line-up recorded backing vocals for an Ernest Ranglin album before breaking up in 1968.
Complete your The Wailing Souls collection. Classic Early Reggae from Studio One, recorded in '69 and '70, but not compiled and released until '75. On first hearing it, it sounds similar in style to the Bob Marley and The Wailers releases from the same time, but sonically and lyrically not quite as potent.

The Wailing Souls brought a poignant, yearning sound associated on one hand with musical traditions of the Jamaican countryside and on the other, with African-American soul outfits like the Impressions and the Temptations, who inspired the formation of scores of Jamaican vocal groups. Many of the latter had perfected their gentle harmonizing singing rock steady-the romantic, soul-inspired Jamaican music that, for two or three intense years, set the stage for roots reggae. But the Souls’ warm four-part harmonies and Rasta themes (filled out on this album by Garth Dennis and George Buddy Haye) brought a sonic and philosophical depth to those rhythms that Junjo’s usual deejays never could.
