AFI (also referred to as The Blood Album) is the self-titled tenth studio album by American rock band AFI. It was released on January 20, 2017, through Concord Bicycle Music. The album release includes four limited sleeve art and vinyl color variants, corresponding to each of the four members of AFI, and associated with each of the four blood groups (A, O, B and AB).
Unlike Max's previous albums (both solo and as part of dc Talk), The Blood is a gospel album instead of having his usual rock stylings. He also explains a bit more on the style, stating, "The Blood is not a classic hymns cover project or a white/homogenized version of black gospel or soul music, it's a sensitive and stylized adaptation of the music that was at the root of rock.
The band's latest is a self-titled release with the subtitle The Blood Album, and it's appropriate as you can feel the blood, sweat and tears all over this new collection as they take you on a journey, working in elements of punk, darkwave and straight-forward rock into a solid top-to-bottom listen. As guitarist Jade Puget recently told us, he and Davey Havok wrote upwards of 60 songs before paring it down to the 14 we hear on The Blood Album, which allows for the band to adhere to the "all killer no filler" vibe.

AFI (The Blood Album) follows in the same vein, with nods to the old days few and far between, as they wander off into some of their most tempered down material to date. While some of it lacks creativity, expression, and comes off a tad bland, you do get a sense of what could have been, had they just unchained themselves a bit more. In stark contrast, when you take in tracks like "Aurelia", "Still A Stranger" (with a surprisingly acoustic spine), Dark Snow" and "Get Hurt", it just feels like AFI could have done away with the warm guitars, the synth vibe (especially on "Above The Bridge" which feels made for an '80s cartoon) and overall, alt. rock sound, and just cut fucking loose.
