The Eighties is a documentary miniseries which premiered on CNN on March 31, 2016. Produced by Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman's studio Playtone, it serves as a follow-up to the predecessors The Sixties and The Seventies with a 7-part series chronicling events and popular culture of the United States during the 1980s. In May 2016, CNN greenlit an 8-part follow-up titled The Nineties, which premiered in 2017.

50 Cent: American rapper, singer, songwriter, actor, television producer, entrepreneur, and investor. Born in the South Jamaica neighborhood of the borough of Queens, Jackson began selling drugs at age twelve during the 1980s crack epidemic. He later began pursuing a musical career and in 2000 he produced Power of the Dollar for Columbia Records, but days before the planned release he was shot and the album was never released. In 2002, after Jackson released the compilation album Guess Who's Back?, he was discovered by Eminem and signed to Shady Records, under the aegis of Dr. Dre's.

Swing Out Sister was part of the '80s British blue-eyed soul genre that included Everything But the Girl, Basia and Breathe. Led by singer Corinne Drewery and keyboardist Andy Cornell, the group's biggest . hit was the infectious "Breakout," which reached in late 1987. The duo is still active today. From Los Angeles, the group Sneaker was part of the SoCal smooth rock/yacht rock genre of the late '70s and early '80s that included such alums as Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald, Pablo Cruise, and Ambrosia. Sung by keyboardist Michael Carey Schneider, this tender love ballad was the band's only charting Top 40 single, peaking at #34.
