This CD of Schubert and Schumann lieder (recorded in 1965 & 67, respectively) has become something of a classic among classical music fans, whether they are vocal aficionados or not, and for good reason. It's an excellent program that includes many of the best-known songs by both composers, not to mention a near-definitive recording of Schubert's "The Shepherd on the Rock. The program starts off with "The Shepherd," with Ameling joined by Jörg Demus on the Hammerflügel, with Hans Deinzer on clarinet. Ameling's deceptively easy vocalism sails through the. A heart-felt thanks to all those who brought this album into the world. One person found this helpful.

An interest in historical keyboard instruments and interpretation combined with a Romantic sensitivity assured Demus a long career as a solo pianist and accompanist.

Jorg Demus seems perfect for Schumann! He doesn't use these pieces as a stage to show off. Virtually every piece perfectly rendered in the spirit of Robert Schumann. Before I listened to these pieces rendered by Wilhelm Kempff. Demus is the light, Kempff the twilight. This set of Schumann's pianoforte works, from Nuovo Era, is now presented in a convenient and reasonably-priced box and is a valuable reference point for students and listeners alike. 5 people found this helpful.

Ständchen", D 889, (known in English by its first line "Hark, hark, the lark" or "Serenade") is a lied for solo voice and piano by Franz Schubert, composed in July 1826 in the then village of Währing. The lied is a setting in the key of C major of the "Song" in act 2, scene 3 of Shakespeare's Cymbeline. Schubert died aged only 31 in 1828, and the song was first published posthumously by Anton Diabelli in 1830.

I find Schumann more like to Schubert than to any other composer and vice versa. Beethoven's music is big in sound and has a very universal feel to it. Chopin's has a sort of unreal beauty to his music. But the fact that Schubert is still considered by some critics as a somewhat restrained 'classicist' distances him from Schumann who was uber Romantic. Also Schubert was capable comfortably handling huge orchestrations, whereas Schumann's orchestrations were always awkward in some ways (apparently - sadly I am no music major to throw in specific examples).

Robert Schumann (German: ; 8 June 1810 – 29 July 1856) was a German composer, pianist, and influential music critic. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest composers of the Romantic era. Schumann left the study of law, intending to pursue a career as a virtuoso pianist. His teacher, Friedrich Wieck, a German pianist, had assured him that he could become the finest pianist in Europe, but a hand injury ended this dream. Schumann then focused his musical energies on composing.
