The Eternal is the fifteenth and final studio album by American alternative rock band Sonic Youth, released on June 9, 2009 by Matador Records, their first on that label. It was their first studio album in three years (since Rather Ripped), making it the band's longest delay between studio albums. The album peaked at No. 18 on the Billboard 200 and was the band's highest charting album of their career in the United States and highest charting album since Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star (1994).

The Eternal ‎(CD, Album, Gat). Matador, High Note Records. So Let's call it . (and mark it as 5).

Its strengths and weaknesses are all upfront- in fact they're pretty well encapsulated in the first two tracks. Opener "Sacred Trickster" is a quick, adrenalized rocker in the vein of 2006's similarly straightforward Rather Ripped. Slamming to a stop after a tight two minutes, the band then tears into "Anti-Orgasm", exploding into biting noise halfway through before the song eventually drifts into beatific, instrumental wandering. It's a familiar move that Sonic Youth have deployed to strong.

Sputnikmusic gave the album a score of . out of 5 and said it was "simply just another confirmation that Sonic Youth is one of the most essential-if not the most essential-indie collectives of the past thirty years. The Phoenix gave it .

The Eternal is Sonic Youth's first album for legendary indie label Matador Records after a nearly 20-year stint with Geffen Records, which dovetails nicely with the fact that this is also the band's first album with former Pavement bassist (and Matador alum) Mark Ibold. Sonic Youth even changed their usual songwriting approach, writing and recording tracks in quick batches instead of planning an entire song cycle at once. Dust wasn't allowed to settle on these songs, nor could it - the most striking thing about The Eternal is how hard it rocks.

Sonic Youth release their sweet sixteenth album via new label Matador Records later this year.

Sonic Youth’s 15th album, The Eternal continues on the path charted by their past three albums into strongly melodic territory. Their first album for new label Matador, The Eternal isn’t a drastic departure for the band, in spite of their newfound freedom from major label contracts. Rather, it’s another solid set of rock songs, and awfully good ones at that. As Murray Street, Sonic Nurse and Rather Ripped have shown, big riffs and big hooks serve the band quite well. Still, it’s unlike Sonic Youth to ever sound too conventional, and as can be expected, The Eternal features a plethora of sonic.
