Album · 2015 · 16 Songs. For all the arch humor, a measure of pathos means FFS never sound too pleased with themselves–not even on the operatic, titled-with-a-wink Collaborations Don’t Work. 1. Johnny Delusional.
Written by Fergal Kinney11 June, 2015. FFS – FFS (Domino Recordings). A collaboration ten years in the works, Franz Ferdinand and Sparks join forces as FFS. Fergal Kinney finds out if the album is big enough for the both of them. IT was in 2004 that Franz Ferdinand, in the midst of the whirlwind success of their debut album, were first caught by the Mael gaze. In the angular, wry art-pop of ‘Take Me Out’, Sparks quite rightly felt they had found kindred spirits.
On FFS, they spend 45 minutes trying every way they can. Johnny Delusional and Call Girl sound like Franz Ferdinand songs slightly retooled to accommodate Russell Mael’s voice, Ron Mael’s keyboards and something of Sparks’ arch lyrical presence ( I gave up blow and Adderrall for you, complains the latter). On Save Me from Myself they appear to have exhausted themselves and are reconciled to playing a supporting role, providing a walloping backbeat and guitars on a Sparks song.
The result, FFS, is not a meeting of equals: It's a marquee-name band throwing their weight behind a cult act that clearly inspired them, and the cult act showing who's really in charge. Franz Ferdinand and cult band Sparks have toyed with making a collaborative album for years. Franz Ferdinand and Sparks initially floated the idea of working together in 2004, following the release of the former band's first album, which went platinum, and the latter band's 19th, which didn't chart.
