The King of Pop was recording the album Triumph with his group The Jacksons at Hollywood Sound studios in Los Angeles at the same time Mason was working on his album Old Crest on a New Wave. When Mason realized he needed someone to sing some high parts on this song, he asked Jackson, who delivered an unmistakable performance.
