But Beyond Hamsterdam still makes for a more compelling end-to-end listen than Pieces largely because it depends so little on the show for its context. So we have Beyond Hamsterdam, a compilation of local Baltimore rap from an honest-to-God major label. From anyone who's been paying attention to the scrappy local scene for the past few years, it's an inspiring development. Baltimore has never produced a major rapper, though a few, like Tupac and DMX, have roots in the city.
No other program has ever done anything remotely like what this one does, namely to portray the social, political, and economic life of an American city with the scope, observational precision, and moral vision of great literature. Baltimore hip-hop and club music from The Wire is showcased on this compilation, which Pitchfork calls a "compelling end-to-end listen. Says Vibe, "B'more hasn't ever had a nationally renowned rap scene. Beyond Hamsterdam proves that it should. Over the course of five seasons, The Wire developed a portrait of Baltimore through the themes of education, the war on drugs, the decline of the working class, the role of political leadership in addressing urban problems, and the mass media’s impact on the city.
There's not much left to say about The Wire, David Simon's intricately plotted Baltimore crime drama that ran on HBO from 2002 to 2008. Critics loved the show so much it was almost embarrassing, but its audiences were never as large as those of The Sopranos, or even Real Sex. Five Years of Music is strictly for Wire fans. You'd have to be a really open-minded listener of music to like all of them. I enjoy it enough, but it isn't essential.
Issued in early 2008 along with the more extensive AND ALL THE PIECES MATTER compilation, BEYOND HAMSTERDAM serves as a musical companion piece to HBO's acclaimed series THE WIRE
