American Beauty is the fifth studio album by rock band the Grateful Dead. Released November 1, 1970, by Warner Bros. Records, the album continued the folk rock and country music style of their previous album Workingman's Dead, issued earlier in the year. Though the Americana approach is still evident in the songwriting, comparatively the sound focused more on folk harmonies and major-key melodies, showing influence from Bob Dylan and Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young.

Grateful Dead American Beauty German CD album. Who says discipline is a bad thing? No one who's heard American Beauty, the Dead's greatest studio achievement. Showcasing 10 concise, country-rooted gems that sound equally good whether you're hanging on the front porch in the afternoon or nursing a bottle after hours, this one could win over many an anti-Jerry.
Released in 1970, American Beauty was recorded by the band during the same sessions during which their previous album, Workingman’s Dead was also recorded. Both of these albums have a bigger emphasis on harmonies and acoustic instrumentation with a focus on the country folk sound. A third album was planned to complete a trilogy of albums in the style of Americana, Ramblin' Rose, though the album was never finished. American Beauty is ranked at on Rolling Stone’s list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, three spots above Workingman’s Dead. American Beauty Q&A.
Album · 1970 · 10 Songs. This 1970 release found the Grateful Dead writing and recording with uncanny economy, creating an album filled with the ringing steel and acoustic guitars of country rock and the lush harmonies and pop arrangements of California folk and psych. Ripple and Box of Rain are dusty, melancholy-tinged turns that address spiritual and mortality issues, while the jovial Sugar Magnolia tells of new-love innocence. The roiling Truckin’ is a dream-weaving life/road metaphor that helped to soothe an entire generation reeling from the Vietnam War and the death of the hippie dream

American Beauty is a perfect display of the new genre the Dead fall into at this time, Country Rock. However, unlike the band’s previous release, Workingman’s Dead, the group does not completely abandon their Psychedelic and Acid Rock side. Box of Rain A very emotional song that was created during a very sad time in the Grateful Dead history. Sugar Magnolia: Since my first listen of the Grateful Dead’s greatest hits album Skeletons from the Closet, I have been in love with Sugar Magnolia. This simply, but nicely composed Bob Weir song speaks about pure love and good times.
