Booker Telleferro Ervin II (October 31, 1930 – August 31, 1970) was an American tenor saxophone player. His tenor playing was characterised by a strong, tough sound and blues/gospel phrasing. He is best known for his association with bassist Charles Mingus. Ervin was born in Denison, Texas. He first learned to play trombone at a young age from his father, who played the instrument with Buddy Tate.

For this CD reissue in his series of Books, Ervin and his quintet (with trumpeter Carmell Jones, pianist Gildo Mahones, bassist Richard Davis, and drummer Alan Dawson) perform four very different blues: the speedy "One for Mort," a low-down "No Booze Blooze," the modal "True Blue," and the minor-toned "Eerie Dearie. The consistently passionate Ervin makes each of the fairly basic originals sound fresh and the performances are frequently exciting inside/outside music.

Complete your Booker Ervin collection. Have just purchased a copy of this exact Transatlantic lp (the only version listed) to find it is pressed in very clear Stereo! I thought I'd put this out there so just be aware.

The Blues Book is an album by American jazz saxophonist Booker Ervin featuring performances recorded in 1964 for the Prestige label. Studio album by. Booker Ervin.

The Blues Book easily holds its own among the Book series, with a blues flavour to complement the other book themes: cooking, singing, freedom an. m. pace. In Jazz polls, Ervin was voted in the Deserving of Wider Recognition category. The problem for any saxophonist in the Sixties must have been being measured up against the giant figures of Coltrane and Rollins. Ervin is no Coltrane-Lite. He has his own distinctive hard-edged voice, capable of complex figures and turns at a cracking pace, his musical ideas sharpened by his years with Mingus
