Hopes for another surprise American success from Peter Murphy with Deep's follow-up went unfulfilled, as success proved not to be the case; released in the initial craze of the grunge/alternative mega-crossover, Smoke's elegant ballads and angular, arty rockers simply didn't fit in. Taken on its own merits, though, Smoke is quite a strong release, avoiding any cloning of Deep or "Cuts You Up" in favor of a different approach meant to bring out the band's live power more directly.

BEGA 123 CD. Peter Murphy. Holy Smoke (CD, Album). This whole album by Peter Murphy is that way. Following his success with "Cuts You Up" in 1990, He had every reason to expect great success with his followup album in 1992. He and his band were still performing at the top of their game-tweaking their progressively harder and more dramatic pop sound. He appeared on the short-lived Dennis Miller show. His Video for the "Sweetest Drop" was crazy awesome. The only difference in 1992 was that no one gave a sh t. It is unfortunate because this album is every bit as deserving of great praise as he got two years before
