EMPEROR OF SAND is yet another very well crafted MASTODON album with all the expected riffs, vocals and percussive accompaniments. While that may sound like a sort of comfort food for some, it is also a source of mediocrity to others.
Mastodon – Emperor of Sand. Death underlies the message and intense, cathartic sound of the band's seventh record. on April 03, 2017, 12:00am. While Emperor of Sand has roots in painfully personal stories, the record kicks off with Sultan’s Curse, and in fact, the entire album seems like it could be turned into a graphic novel or video game. Brann Dailor describes the theme: A Sultan in the desert hands down a death sentence to this guy.
Mastodon set the bar high with Emperor of Sand. It was written in difficult circumstances emotionally and creatively. Like their first three albums (and unlike their last two), this is a concept album. Its dominant theme is of time running out, and its 11 tracks offer an allegorical story of a man handed a death sentence by a desert sultan. To escape, he flees into the expanse of the geography's emptiness, but the further he goes, the more lost he becomes in the sand as an unrelenting sun begins to claim his energy and ultimately his body - think radiation poisoning.
Emperor Of Sand is both progressive and regressive, as Mastodon takes two different parts of its past and slaps them together. And while it occasionally works, more often than not Mastodon just sounds confused. Rather than directly confronting the passing of guitarist Bill Kelliher’s mother through explicit lyrics and melancholic arrangements, Mastodon disguises pain in the form of a (loose) concept album about the desert on Emperor of Sand, their seventh studio release. Using the ever-shifting sands as a metaphor for one's morality,. Label: Reprise Records – 558742-1. Format: 2 Vinyl, LP, Album, 180g. really not liking the mixing of this pressing but after many spins i'm starting to understand why this is their best selling album. the windchime/bell intro of the first song probably impresses me the most as well as brent's lead work.
