Never again On your force-fed illusions to choke You feed off my pain Feed off my life. There won't be another dawn We will reap as we have sown. Always the same My tired eyes have seen enough Of all your lies My hate is blind. Slaughter of the soul Suicidal final art Children, born of sin Tear your soul apart. Never again My tired eyes have seen enough Of all your lies My hate is blind.
Slaughter of the Soul is masterfully crafted in design, both technically and lyrically, And through sheer talent At The Gates managed to create, or at least contribute to a new genre of music, melodic metal core. A hybrid of melodic death metal fused with elements of metal core, Without this album, bands such as Avenged Sevenfold, Killswitch Engage as well as Unearth and many more simply would not exist today if not for Slaughter of the Soul. Slaughter Of The Soul is fantastic from start to finish and does not let off the throttle.
Your soul has been slaughtered. The band At the Gates became more than a band at the end of their career. They became known as the band that truly revolutionized melodic death metal and made it what it is today. Without At the Gates, the genre would never have become what it has today. Since 1990 they combined melodic yet heavy elements with memorable and somewhat progressive songwriting. It all came to a head with their final album in the fateful mid-90s, Slaughter of the Soul.

Slaughter Of The Soul is now firmly established as one of the most influential metal albums released during the 90s. The so-called ‘Gothenburg sound’ has become such a ubiquitous part of modern metal’s sonic vocabulary that few would dispute At The Gates’ status as pioneers. Death metal hits? Yeah, we’ll drink to that! Back in the early 90s, however, the Swedes were simply one of many aspiring underground death metal bands exhibiting a cheerful disinterest in mass appeal. Recorded early in 1995 at Studio Fredman in Gothenburg, and overseen by noted producer Fredrik Nordström, Slaughter Of The Soul was At The Gates’ first album for new labelmasters Earache Records, home to many of the Swedes’ own favourite bands, including Morbid Angel and Carcass. Signing to Earache was undoubtedly a commercial step up for Jonas and his bandmates, but they felt no pressure to make a particular type of metal album. Those songs, those riffs, those performances, it was all just a big coincidence, Jonas grins. I am pretty certain we didn’t have a plan.

Slaughter of the Soul was more rooted in American thrash (especially Slayer) than its peers, and didn't seem to be consciously trying to break new ground. It was simply a stripped-down, no-frills melodic death album that hit all the basic points of the style. It's also important to note that in place of the usual guttural death grunts, vocalist Tomas Lindberg here adopts a strangled shriek that keeps the lyrics somewhat intelligible. At the Gates were nominated for a Swedish Grammy (Grammis) for Slaughter of the Soul in 1996, but did not win. They won the Swedish Grammy (Grammis) in February 2015 for the 2014 comeback album At War with Reality
