Steppenwolf sold over 25 million records worldwide, released eight gold albums and 12 Billboard Hot 100 singles, of which six were top 40 hits, including three top 10 successes: "Born to Be Wild", "Magic Carpet Ride", and "Rock Me". Steppenwolf enjoyed worldwide success from 1968 to 1972, but clashing personalities led to the end of the core lineup. Dunhill had released an album of a collection of Steppenwolf songs titled Rest in Peace. Born to Be Wild - A Retrospective. The Millennium Collection.
Steppenwolf captured the zeitgeist again with their enduring hit single 'Magic Carpet Ride', which entered the US Hot 100 on 5 October 1968. Issued in September 1968, just three months after ‘Born To Be Wild’, ‘Magic Carpet Ride’ entered the US Hot 100 on 5 October; eventually flying to No. 3 in the US charts, it became the group’s second (and last) top five entry in the US, and their longest-charting single, staying on the Hot 100 for 16 weeks. It was the product of a particularly fertile period for the group, appearing on their second album of that year, The Second, and also finding its way onto the soundtrack of the little-known Marlon Brando sexcapade, Candy, in December 1968.
