Incredibly, Unicorn were on the road with Hawkwind when their third album hit the streets - incredibly, because it is difficult to think of two bands that existed at more extreme ends of the period rock spectrum. But the blending worked, as Unicorn's subtly countrified, folky-edged mantras fed the heads of the Hawkwind faithful with many of the same acoustic energies that fired the headliner's most evocative dreams.

Unicorn – Too Many Crooks. Posted by on December 9, 2017. Posted in: The Progressive Aspect. Tagged: The Progressive Aspect News. This year marks a decade of Esoteric Recordings. Beginning by releasing solely progressive rock music, it’s safe to say the style of their releases has strayed from the original remit somewhat. Great release, Esoteric, but could we have some more prog, please?

Too Many Crooks, which followed (in the States, this would be considered the band’s second album when in actuality, it is their third), sees Gilmour again in the producer’s chair. The band (with the same line up) is really in the moment here. Whether it’s Andy Jackson’s meticulous remastering or that all the pistons were firing for Unicorn at this point, Crooks sounds fantastic. David Gilmour provides the pedal steel guitar on the title track. Vocally, the band sounds like early Eagles. But really Too Many Crooks is all Unicorn, with enough wacky changes, restraint and a vibe to make it unique. Disco Dancer isn’t disco but a quick single release with strings added. The Poco sounding Easy is just that, but No Way Out Of Here might be the centerpiece of Too Many Crooks.
