Westward Ho, the Wagons!" a Walt Disney Production made in 1956, has finally made it to DVD after many years of neglect. Not a box-office success but more of a curiosity in its day. I believe that the story told was too simple and charming and did not reflect the real hardships of the early pioneers.

Title: Walt Disney's Westward Ho the Wagons Released on December 20, 1956, Westward Ho the Wagons combined the star power of Davy Crockett star Fess Parker with several of the Mouseketeers from Disney's Mickey Mouse Club in the studio's first true western adventure. The story's about a group of pioneers making their way to Oregon. Along the way, they face danger from hostile Indian tribes and illness. The film was directed by William Beaudine, who had also directed the Spin and Marty serials on the Mickey Mouse Club. It was D311 in the Golden Record line-up, featuring two of the songs from Westward Ho the Wagons: The Ballad of John Colter and Pioneer's Prayer. The colorful picture sleeves shows the Fess Parker character leading a campfire chorus. Mitch Miller and his orchestra back up The Westerners in performing the songs.
