Mighty Hawkwind Classics 1980-1985. As with so many other aspects of the Hawkwind catalog, there's a serious need for all of this material to be correctly cataloged, annotated, and then released in coherent form. Dave Brock's own Weird Tapes and Collectors Series releases have made a start on this task, and inquiring minds are best advised to wait for him to address the issue before taking the plunge into any of the many compilations.

First there's the Hawkwind Zoo EP from1981. This features three tracks; Hurry On Sundown, Sweet Mistress of Pain and Kings of speed. This version of Hurry on Sundown is apparently the first Hawkwind Demo and certainly gives a flavour on the first album that followed. Although a demo, it's not too rough there's just not a lot of production. Sweet Mistress of Pain is another early recording so-so. Fine in tis context but not one to use as an introduction to Hawkwind
Hawkwind is the self-titled debut album by Hawkwind, released in 1970, originally on Liberty Records, later reissued on Sunset Records. This album is historic since it is one of the first space rock LPs. The Pretty Things guitarist Dick Taylor, who was looking for a new venture after leaving the band, was pulled into Hawkwind playing some gigs and producing this album. After several unsuccessful attempts to capture the band's sound in the studio, it was decided simply to record it live in the studio.
