If you visit Dictionary. Therefore, Alice in Chains are, by definition, the grungiest of the grunge bands. Of the three others in the ranks of Seattle’s Big Four, Soundgarden, who played loud (but arty, melodic and, at times, beautiful) music, would come in second. Pearl Jam, with its moody, classic rock-indebted sound, would land in third. Alice in Chains are the Kings of Grunge, and today (Sept. 29) their hit sophomore album, Dirt, turns 25 years old. There is no more nihilistic or aggressive album of the era. Heroin and other drug addictions played a major part in the Seattle/grunge music scene; many bands used and/or were inspired by its destruction. But no other band so blatantly addressed its dark spiral, both lyrically and musically.

Not every song on Dirt is explicitly about heroin, but Jerry Cantrell's solo-written contributions (nearly half the album) effectively maintain the thematic coherence - nearly every song is imbued with the morbidity, self-disgust, and/or resignation of a self-aware yet powerless addict. Cantrell's technically limited but inventive guitar work is by turns explosive, textured, and queasily disorienting, keeping the listener off balance with atonal riffs and off-kilter time signatures.

We'll have things fixed soon. Dirt is the second studio effort by Seattle grunge band Alice in Chains, released on September 29, 1992 by Columbia Records. It was produced by Dave Jerden (who previously worked on their 1990 debut, Facelift) and each member of the group, which at the time included singer Layne Staley, guitarist Jerry Cantrell, drummer Sean Kinney, and bassist Mike Starr. It would be the last album with the original line-up, as Starr was fired in January 1993
